Apple iPad Mini vs. iPad

Apple iPad Mini vs. iPad(4th Genration): Specs Compared

It used to be fairly easy to decide on an iPad—pick your storage capacity, price, and whether or not you need cellular data support or can get by with just Wi-Fi. But not anymore.

Today Apple unveiled the long-rumored iPad mini, a smaller, lighter model with a 7.9-inch screen, instead of the 9.7-inch Retina display on the regular iPad. Just to keep things interesting, the company also boosted the existing, larger iPad, adding a new A6X processor, faster Wi-Fi performance, and the 8-pin Lightning connector, all while keeping the price the same as before—starting at $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model. Both also have 4G LTE versions available for $130 more, and you can get them all in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB varieties.

So now which do you choose? Many people have extolled the virtues of smaller tablets. Most of the praise is centered around the ability to use the tablet one-handed, and to carry it in a coat pocket or an even smaller bag. That makes the iPad mini perfect for reading books, playing certain kinds of games, and just having it handy in a crowded coffee shop or anywhere space is constrained.

Don't discount the iPad mini's lighter weight, either. Amazingly, it weighs less than half of what the regular-sized iPad weighs, despite only losing 1.8 inches of screen diameter to its larger sibling. It's also $170 less expensive.

That said, there's still plenty of reason to get the larger one. The 9.7-inch model has four times the screen resolution, at 2,048-by-1,536 pixels instead of 1,024-by-768. It also has a new A6X processor that Apple promises is up to twice as fast as the earlier A5X in the iPad introduced this past April. Both of those processors are faster than the A5 CPU in the iPad mini, too. That makes the 9.7-inch model better for hardcore gaming and more CPU-intensive content consumption.

There's a lot more to consider, too, but we're getting ahead of ourselves. Instead, here's a spec comparison between the iPad mini and the 4th-generation iPad with Retina Display.

Pre-orders for the iPad mini and the iPad (4th Generation) start Friday, October 26th, with the Wi-Fi-only versions hitting Apple Stores on November 2nd, 2012 at 8am.

Apple announces iPad mini, refreshed fourth generation iPad

Apple unveiled a smaller version of the iPad as well as an updated fourth generation iPad during a media event at the California Theatre in San Jose today. Officially known as the iPad mini, it’s much more than just a shrunken-down iPad according to Apple.

The 7.9-inch display maintains the same 1,024 x 768 resolution found on the iPad 2 which means apps won’t need to be refreshed to scale on the iPad mini. The unit itself is 7.2mm thick, or roughly a quarter inch thinner than the fourth generation iPad, and weighs 0.68 pounds. It’s small enough to be held in one hand, as Apple’s Phil Schiller demonstrated during the announcement.

Specification-wise, the iPad mini packs a dual-core A5 processor, dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, a FaceTime HD camera, 5-megapixel rear iSight camera with 1080p recording and an optional LTE radio. Apple’s new Lightning connector comes standard alongside claims of 10 hour battery life.

Apple is clearly targeting Google’s Nexus 7 and other 7-inch slates with the iPad mini. Schiller made sure to highlight the fact that the Nexus has a thicker plastic bezel and a smaller display area. He even went as far as to say that you get a tablet experience on the iPad mini but you only get a scaled-up phone experience on the Nexus.
The iPad mini will be available in white and black with the same curved back as the iPod touch – the black featuring the same type of anodized aluminum found on the iPhone 5. Pricing starts at $329 for a 16GB Wi-Fi only model, $429 for a 32Gb model or $519 for 64GB of storage. Add $130 to each tier for LTE connectivity.

The iPad mini will be available for pre-order on October 26 (that’s probably not a coincidence). Wi-Fi models will ship on November 2 with cellular-enabled units hitting stores two weeks later.

Apple also announced an updated full-size iPad simply referred to as the fourth generation iPad. This new iPad includes a beefier A6X processor for double the CPU and graphics performance, a new FaceTime camera that supports 720p resolution, the new Lightning connector, 802.11a/b/g/n dual-band Wi-Fi and the same image signal processor found in the iPhone 5. Pricing remains the same as the third generation iPad which starts at $499 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model.

Needless to say, the third generation iPad certainly had a short lifespan at just over six months.

Dell Windows 8 Tablet

The new Dell tablets running Windows 8 and Windows RT are now up for pre-order. The Dell XPS 10 running Windows RT and based on Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip has a starting price of $499.99. What you get at that price is a 10.1 inch device with 1366 x 768 pixel density, 32 GB of storage, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The tablet will also come pre-loaded with Office Home & Student 2013 RT. The 64 GB version costs $599.99 while $679.99 will fetch you the same with 32 GB of storage and a keyboard docking station.

Dell’s Windows 8 offering comprises of the business oriented Latitude 10 device built around a Intel Atom Z2760 Clover Trail processor. On offer are three models each offering 2GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. The base Wi-Fi version costs $649 while the top of the line 4G capable version costs $849. There is a $749 version in between which offers support for ethernet and comes with an optional docking station.

Kindle Fire HD Is Amazon’s Bestseller, FreeTime Upgraded

The new Kindle Fire HD may just be a month old, though the device has already emerged as the new chartbuster for the company. With a starting price of $199, the tablet offers stupendous value for the cost, though Amazon hasn’t made it known how many of the 7 inch tablets they have sold. Interestingly, the device’s release came just as the world was waiting for the launch of the new iPad Mini, which is expected to be a direct competitor to the Kindle Fire HD.

Meanwhile, there is a new update for the Kindle Fire’s FreeTime feature, which allows parents to exercise greater control over the way they want their kids to handle the device.

Fujitsu Windows 8 Tablet

Fujitsu is readying a few tablets that would accompany the launch of the Windows 8 OS. However, while this puts the Japanese company in the same bracket as a horde of other companies, what makes the Fujitsu Stylistic Q572 unique is that it is among the first to feature the new AMD Z-60 Hondo chip. AMD is claiming it to be low on power demands while delivering superior processing capabilities.

This apart, the tablet’s spec sheet is quite impressive and includes a USB 3.0, and USB 2.0 port, HDMI, and an SDXC card slot, along with a SIM card slot, as well. The tablet offers up 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB to 256 GB of SSD storage.

The Fujitsu Stylistic QH77/J is another Windows 8 offering from the company to be launched alongside Windows 8 in Japan. The tablet comes with a keypad docking station, which means it can be transformed into a 11.6 inch notebook. Specifications are comparable, with an Intel Core i5-3427U Ivy Bridge processor at the core working in conjunction with a 4 GB RAM and a 64 GB solid state disk.

iPad 4 Rumored with Bigger Face Time Camera

We seem to be nearing the end of one rumor story while starting off on a new exciting one. The iPad Mini is all set to be unveiled in a few hours from now, and a new image supposedly of the iPad 4 has made it online that hints at a bigger facetime camera. Apple should already have on its design of the next gen iPad, given the company’s pledge to replace the existing lineup every year. As such, the new iPad 4 should be with us during the March-April 2013 period.

It all started with an image purported to be that of iPad 4 featuring a larger lens opening on the front, which could be an indication of a bigger camera. Both iPod Touch and iPhone 5 carry a 1.2 megapixel unit at the front and the same or even better seems likely for the iPad 4. An optically-bonded display is being talked about, leading to a better quality image while reducing glare. However, a new regular sized iPad is unlikely to be unveiled at Apple’s upcoming media event, so we will have to wait until spring 2013 to get a firsthand account of the new improvements.

Update: Apple surprised everyone by launching not only the iPad Mini but a new regular iPad 4 as well.

LG Windows 8 Tablet

LG hasn’t had a very memorable tablet experience with the Android operating system. However, the company is betting big on the Windows 8 platform and has already unveiled a tablet running Microsoft’s next gen OS. Christened LG H160, the tablet incorporates a slide out design so that the keyboard can be slid behind the 11.6 inch display when not in use. What makes the H160 unique is that it offers an auto slide out feature, meaning the keyboard can be launched by the click of a button.

The H160 hybrid tablet offers a USB, HDMI, and a microSD card slot. The tablet is just 15.9 mm thick while weighing a shade above a kilo. LG is claiming a battery backup time of a pretty decent 10 hours. The hybrid tablet also supports LG’s Smart Touch Pen, though further details are still awaited. Microsoft is all set to launch Windows 8 on Oct 26, which is when we expect to come across more information on the LG tablet. A flurry of tablet launches are also expected during that time.

Toys “R” Us Tabeo Kid-Friendly Tablet Now Shipping

Kids flocking over to Toys “R” Us retail sites will be greeted with the Tabeo tablet, which the retail chain had first unveiled on September and is now finally ready for some prime time action. The timing of the release is perfect, what with the holiday season just round the corner. Priced at a convenient $149.99, the Tabeo might not be a trailblazer as far as performance aspects are concerned, but can hold its own among its peers.

With a 7 inch 800 x 480 pixel display upfront, the Tabeo is powered by a 1 GHz Cortex A8 processor that is supported by a 1 GB RAM along with 4 GB of internal memory. Other features of the Android tablet include a microSD card slot, a micro HDMI and micro USB 2.0 port, integrated microphone and speaker, and a front facing camera. The Tabeo is wi-fi capable and allows for seven hours of video playback. Plus, there is a wide range of accessories to be picked up as well, all priced between $5.99 and $39.99.

Nextbook Premium 10SE Tablet

The Premium 10SE is the newest tablet offering from Nextbook and boasts of an extremely competitive price of just $279.99 for a tablet that offers a 9.7 inch screen. The spec sheet is quite decent, including a 1 GHz processor along with 1 GB RAM and 8 GB of internal memory. A microSD card slot allows 32 GB of max expansion and a USB port are other positives with the 10SE. The tablet running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich also comes with 25 ebooks pre-loaded into the device, which means you can get started with the device right out of the box. While the tablet can be considered quite reasonably priced, Radio Shack and Hastings have sweetened the deal further by offer a $30 discount off the MSRP.

Windows 8: Microsoft hopeful, PC makers skeptical

Windows 8: Microsoft hopeful, PC makers skeptical

While Microsoft is touting the October 26 launch of Windows 8 as the savior of the computer industry, PC makers and analysts are increasingly skeptical that the new operating system will lure consumers away from tablets and smartphones.

Even Intel Corp, which makes the processors at the heart of 80 per cent of personal computers, doubts that Windows 8 will have a big impact on sales.

CEO Paul Otellini has said he's "very excited" about the new operating system but expects the usual holiday bounce in PC sales to be half of what it usually is. Otellini suggested that PC makers are being cautious about building big stocks of Windows 8 PCs.

"We haven't had a chance to really judge how consumers will embrace this in the PC space or not," he said.

In the US, a mature market where consumers are gobbling up tablets, PC sales have already been declining for two years.

Meanwhile, Apple has been doubling sales of iPad tablets every year since the first model was introduced in 2010.

In the April to June period, Apple shipped 17 million iPads. Hewlett-Packard Co, then the world's largest maker of PCs, shipped 13.6 million PCs, according to Gartner analysts.

Smartphones, which were a niche market before the 2007 launch of the iPhone, outsold PCs last year, even though PC sales were at a record high. Some 488 million smartphones were sold in 2011, according to research firm Canalys.

The PC market is still big, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told the Seattle Times in September, "and Windows 8 will propel that volume."

Windows 8 is a response to the popularity of tablets.

It tosses out many Windows conventions in favor of a radical new look that's designed to be easy to use on a touch screen. With Windows 8, PC makers are releasing a slew of laptops that double as tablets, either with detachable screens or with screens that fold down over the keyboard.

PC makers began the year with the hope that a new wave of lightweight laptops called ultrabooks would provide a sales lift. But ultrabooks are still expensive, with most models around $1,000, and they haven't been compelling enough to overcome the growing popularity of smartphones and tablets.

PC makers seem to be in a tough spot when it comes to taking advantage of Windows 8. Adding a touchscreen into a PC is expensive, and they're competing with tablets that are much cheaper.

Meanwhile, Microsoft hasn't made much effort to add new features for mouse-and-keyboard PCs to Windows 8.
