iPhone 5 launches on September 21st starting at $199, preorders begin on the 14th

Apple (AAPL) on Wednesday announced during its press conference in San Francisco, California that the next-generation iPhone 5 will become available starting Friday, September 21st, and preorder availability begins on September 14th. The handset will start at $199 with 16GB of memory, and it will be available in both black and white. The 32GB version of the iPhone 5 will retail for $299, and the 64GB model will cost $399. Pricing aligns with Apple’s previous-generation iPhone 4S, and all prices require a new two-year contract. The iPhone 5 will be available from Verizon Wireless (VZ), AT&T (T) and Sprint (S) in the U.S. Apple also confirmed that the iPhone 3GS will no longer be sold following the launch of the iPhone 5; the iPhone 4S will be $99 on contract and the iPhone 4 will be free. iOS 6, the latest version of Apple’s mobile platform, will become available on September 19th for current iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users.
